These figurines are carved out of tagua, a tropical palm nut commonly known as, ivory nut or vegetable ivory.  It closely resembles elephant ivory in color, density and touch.  Each figurine stands 2″ to 3″ tall.  $10 apiece plus shipping

Tagua is green, eco-friendly product.   Its a source of ivory that doesn’t require killing an animal.  Tagua is a valuable native crop, gathered from wild groves growing in the cloud forest.  Since you have to have tagua trees to have tagua nuts, locals are much less likely to clear the land for another corn field or pasture.  And it sustains the economy of local communities reducing the pressure to migrate to cities and other countries.
